The Stralau peninsula near Berlin's Ostkreuz station is a chic residential area, the adjacent Rumelsburg Lake and the promenades along the shore are popular recreational areas. A new addition to the nearby Kynaststraße is the B:HUB: a seven to ten-story, 300 metre long building. "To give the B:HUB its own rhythm, we have angled the course of the block several times," say the architects Frank Barkow and Regine Leibinger.
Very special cornices, special functional glass
While the base facade is a mullion-transom construction, the shell of the upper floors is a classic perforated facade. Embedded in a strict grid of pilaster strips and cornices are large, vertically divided window areas (solar control glass SGG Cool Lite SKN 176/176 II and SGG Climaplus One), supplied by CSP partner caleoglas Ost from nearby Potsdam. The cornice strips consist of exposed concrete precast elements, the pilaster strips support a cladding of white-glazed, fluted terracotta elements.
These represent an absolutely special feature of the project. Some of the ceramic elements are very large and fit perfectly on top of each other. The architects Barkow and Leibinger put a lot of energy into developing and detailing for this feature.

Another planning challenge was the relatively demanding sound insulation requirements of 45 dB on the long side facing the railroad line. All windows have external sun protection. In addition, some of the glass must meet maximum safety requirements such as providing security alarms as well as protection against penetration by missiles and break-ins.
