The Bucky Lab team of Guilherme Silveira Ferreira, Isidora Matskidou, Kaan Akbaba, Randy Bongers and Stephan Kolman have designed a dual-axis modular photovoltaic system that can be applied to existing buildings‘ facades, turning it into a building-integrated PV system.

Because PV panels are most efficient when the sunlight hits them at 90 degrees, the system is designed to follow the sun’s position in the sky in order to gain as much as possible solar energy. Additionally, integrating PV into the building envelope provides electricity production, shading, as well as daylight distribution. In other words: The Solar Tracker is a smart facade element that is able to become a platform for energy efficiency and visual comfort.
