Facade glass for the new Dreiländergalerie shopping mall

The Dreiländergalerie shopping mall, located directly at the Weil am Rhein railway station, has over 70 shops and numerous restaurants and cafés. Architecturally, the organic design of the building and the shimmering metallic brass-coloured facade of aluminium and glass are immediately striking. The two-layer facade visually emphasises the curved overall appearance that runs through the entire shopping centre.

The glass facade closes all wall openings, while the front layer consists of perforated aluminium panels, some of which are several metres high. Lamparter Stahl und Glas was entrusted with the planning, production and installation of the glass elements. For the Dreiländergalerie, it was faced with the challenge of finding a substructure that would allow easy installation of the glass panes and at the same time provide a fastening option for the aluminium panels.

Together with the University of Kassel, Lamparter developed a special construction, the "ladder" as it is called by the employees: a 1-metre wide, 5-metre high substructure made of steel profiles. It is equipped with a façade attachment structure into which the glass is clamped.

The steel-glass modules are largely prefabricated in the factory and fixed to the raw ceiling on site. In order to be able to reproduce the numerous concave and convex curves of the façade - and yet not have to bend either glass or aluminium - the facade was divided into segments and the individual elements were each mounted at the required angle.

Thanks to this modular construction method, Lamparter's employees were able to make the building windproof within a short time and the interior work could begin quickly - a great advantage for the overall progress of the construction.

Facade glass manufactured by Vandaglas

For the glazing, the client chose Climaplus insulating glass with the highly efficient Cool-Lite XtremeE 70/33 Diamant sun shading. The coating allows for one of the most efficient solar control glasses currently offered by Saint-Gobain Glass on the market.

The high light transmission of up to 71 % (due to the combination of a neutral solar control layer and extra-white glass) creates a strikingly bright atmosphere inside the room; the excellent g-value of 0.33 (Ug-value = 1.0 W/m²K) ensures maximum comfort. At the Dreiländergalerie, an area of 3500 m² and two glass roofs were clad by Vandaglas GmbH (www.vandaglas.com) from the CSP network.
