seele installs XXL glass panes and doors

St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York: So close to heavenly

This construction was realised by the facade specialist seele from Gersthofen in Germany. The 82 square metre all-glass structure consists partly of facade panes over 10 metres high which are supported by a seven-metre glass beam made of eight-layer laminate glass. The individual panes of the space-filling glass construction weigh up to about 2.5 tons.

seele was commissioned with the design, manufacture and installation of this project. In order not to visually disturb the existing architecture, the designers envisaged a highly transparent all-glass construction which should fit perfectly into the building and at the same time be very discreet.

How big were the panes of the unobtrusive construction?

"The upper part of the glass interior facade consists of approx. 10.7 × 2.4 m facade panes made of 3 × 12 mm laminated safety glass. This makes the construction appear extremely transparent and weightless," says Michael Steinhülb, Managing Director of seele, Inc. in New York.

The integrated glass swing doors in the lower part of the inner facade are set slightly forward to preserve the existing mosaic floor in the chapel. The all-round brass cladding of the facade, which was adapted to exactly follow the contours of the existing supports, is also particularly eye-catching.
