Smart ventilation:

Automated windows for fresh air in indoor spaces

Fresh air has a stimulating effect on mood. Researchers assume that this also has an effect on concentration, working memory and the psyche as a whole. It has been shown that the quality of learning can improve by up to 15 % through a good indoor climate. It is therefore all the more crucial that classrooms and offices, for example, are sufficiently supplied with fresh air. In this context, a study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP shows that children often spend time in classrooms where the CO2 concentration is above 2,000 ppm. It is recommended that the values are mostly between 1,000 and 1,200 ppm and that this concentration should only be exceeded for short periods of time.

Fully automated fresh air supply

Another important finding of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry: free window ventilation to improve protection from diseases such as Covid-19 and air quality is often not sufficient on its own and must be used in a coordinated way, for example by CO2 sensors. In this context, holistic solutions that network various sensors directly with automated window drives are considered particularly effective, as the error-proneness of manual opening is completely eliminated here.

Against this background, WindowMaster offers the digital control system NV Embedded. It records the data from the indoor and outdoor sensors, which serve as the basis for controlling the room climate. Depending on the setting, they are stored in the cloud or in the building management system and can be tracked in real time - at any time and from any location. The actual and target values of CO2, rain or wind sensors can be adjusted at any time and are permanently checked during operation. If the values differ, the windows open and close silently and fully automatically by means of chain or spindle drives depending on the natural conditions. For example, the drives extend less far in the event of increased wind force or heavy rain than when the sky is calm and blue.

For companies, shopping centres or restaurants, this topic can become a decisive competitive advantage. After all, establishments that offer a demonstrably safe indoor climate and communicate this clearly and transparently, for example with a notice, create trust and offer the necessary security that many customers are looking for in view of the ongoing pandemic.
