TU Delft's Bucky Lab: An elegant and playful shading system

This shading system is inspired by auxetic structures. When stretched, these structures expand perpendicular to the applied force. As the shading screen opens up, its elements rotate and displace both vertically and horizontally to allow more daylight to come through. The pattern organically changes in an elegant and playful manner, as it gives users a sense of control over the amount of daylight coming into the space.

As this wooden prototype demonstrates, the system can also be partially deployed to only provide shade where it is needed.
