The official bid had been supported by the European lobby association Glass for Europe, along with the International Glass Commission (ICG), which has already planned several events around the world for the Year of Glass. The United Nations resolution invites "all relevant stakeholders" to contribute to the International Year of Glass with activities.

The events and actions are to raise awareness of and draw political attention to the importance of glass in everyday life it, according to the German Federal Flat Glass Association, which will also make contributions to the International Year of Glass.
