The Mother of Cities Stadium, located in Santiago del Estero, is designed and built not only to look striking, but also to be strong, robust and safe in the face of passionate sporting fans. Complying with all AFA, Conmebol and FIFA regulations, the 30,000-capacity stadium held its first international football match – between Chile and Argentina – on 3 June 2021 in a 2022 World Cup qualifier.
Glazed balustrades for crowd control and protection
Early in the design phase, a circular layout was chosen for the stadium on the 20-hectare site to give spectators maximum visibility of the field. But this had to be balanced with safety and security. So, to deliver unobstructed views inside the stadium, but also maintain segregation, protection and control of the crowds, glazed balustrades were chosen, incorporating SentryGlas Ionoplast interlayers from Kuraray.

The balustrade panels are made up of a SentryGlas interlayer between two 10-millimetre fully tempered glass panes and are mounted along their bottom edge using an Aluwind mounting bracket. The stadium uses two panel sizes: 1,500 x 2,500 mm and 1,500 x 1,700 mm. An estimated 1000 square metres of laminated glass was used in total.
Demonstrating what SentryGlas can do
The decision to use glazed balustrades made it possible to provide a safe, secure and clear viewing experience for all football fans and visitors to the stadium while maintaining thrilling sporting experiences. On the other hand, there is always the risk of football crowds turning to violence and vandalism, so the architects were looking for the safest glass-based system.

In order to demonstrate what the glazed panels with SentryGlas interlayers and their supports were capable of, Vidrial, the laminator, performed glass-impact tests on the balustrade solution system.
