Glass for Europe has recently become an official member of the European Solar PV Industry Alliance, an initiative launched by the European Commission in December 2022. The Alliance gathers the key players in the solar energy value chain and aims to increase the production of solar modules and value chain components in Europe.
Why is Glass for Europe now a member of the European Solar PV Industry Alliance?
Glass is an essential component of solar modules and building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and accounts for between 65% and 95% of the weight of solar energy modules. Glass for Europe represents almost 90% of flat glass production in the EU and its members can play a central role in rebuilding a European solar industry in the EU.
The main objective of the European Solar PV Industry Alliance is to mobilise funding for European solar PV projects to increase production capacity. So far, four working groups have been formed to launch the activities for 2023:
Price Independent Conditions working group: stimulating demand for solar modules.
Value Chain working group: ensuring that the EU is able to reach 30 gigawatts of production along the value chain.
Finance working group: closing OPEX and CAPEX gaps along the value chain and developing proposals for financing support and mechanisms.
Skills working group: closing the skills gap at all levels.
