CE marking remains valid in the UK

The CE marking for construction products from the EU will continue to be accepted for the time being when they are placed on the UK market, according to a recent announcement from the UK government.

Background and significance of the extension

In a statement by UK Ministerial Representative Rushanara Ali, it was emphasised that there is currently insufficient testing and certification capacity in the UK to ensure a complete switch to a national testing regime.

An immediate termination of CE recognition could lead to trade barriers and jeopardise the supply of important construction products. The decision to extend is intended to give companies more time to prepare for possible future changes.

Future developments and transitional arrangements

However, the British government is planning to revise the regulations for construction products in the long term and implement reforms to ensure the safety of buildings.

According to Rushanara Ali, the industry should be given sufficient planning security. Should changes to the recognition of the CE marking be decided, a transition period of at least two years would apply. This gives the industry sufficient time to prepare for possible changes.
