For the new institute building of the Fraunhofer IEE in the centre of Kassel, the office HHS Planer und Architekten designed a future-oriented building that provides space for a large technical centre with various specialist laboratories as well as offices and seminar and event rooms on a usable area of 7600 square metres.
With its elegant sweep, the institute building makes a striking statement in the direction of the city centre. The elongated structure houses the workplaces for all institute staff as well as open courtyards in the technical centre and atriums between the office levels.
Efficiency in the energy concept
The distribution of opaque and transparent surfaces in the facade is closely coordinated with the energy concept so as not to risk too many solar gains that would unnecessarily heat up the building.
The proportion of window area was calculated precisely for the energetic irradiation and the optimal daylight gain in order to be able to perfectly illuminate the workplaces behind.

This resulted in a gridded sequence of opaque blind cladding, fixed glazing and narrow opening casements, interrupted by the PV panels and profile-integrated spandrel glazing individually manufactured for the building.
Multifunctional solar control glass
The facade of the base storey consists of a highly thermally insulated FWS 50.SI mullion/transom construction from Schüco with almost frameless transparency. The fixed glazing in the entrance area, secured with point fixings, appears externally as a flush all-glass facade.
For the entire building envelope, 2700 square metres of insulating glass units with a Ug value of 0.6 were produced, planned and delivered by Energy Glas GmbH in Wolfhagen.

The planners and facade builders chose a triple insulating glass with the sun shading insulating glass Gewe-therm sun from Schollglas to achieve maximum light yield with highly effective thermal insulation at the same time.
