The ‘Smart’ Campus of the University of Bordeaux is a preparation centre for Olympic athletes. Smart stands for Sports, Mouvement, Ambition, Recherche, Technologie - in other words, sport, movement, ambition, research and technology. The Smart Campus is an integral part of the University of Bordeaux's sports policy and is dedicated to research into human motor skills in sport and the arts.
The Living Lab is part of the ‘Operation Campus Bordeaux’ programme, a €500 million project with which the university is striving to achieve international excellence status. Here, human movements and performance mechanisms can be studied in all their forms with high precision and using the latest medical and technical technologies.

The aim is to promote sporting activities in popular sports as well as innovative training and performance enhancements for top athletes.
Smart facade for the smart sports centre
GPAA architectures, based in Nantes, was responsible for the architecture. The building consists of a simple body with a finely detailed facade made of shimmering silver aluminium composite panels.
The almost 12 metre high, fully glazed facade is fitted with SageGlass Classic dynamic glazing. This electrochromic glazing is tinted or brightened by a sensor on the roof of the building depending on the weather conditions. The intelligent control system triggers the tinting of the glazing on sunny days and thus regulates the amount of daylight entering the building. The interior benefits from thermal and visual comfort because there is no glare or heat peaks.
Sunlight inside and outside views
In April 2024, the Smart Campus, a technically state-of-the-art and intelligently networked vocational training and research centre for popular and high-performance sport, opened in Bordeaux in the south of France. The dynamic glass facade with SageGlass Classic ensures the best lighting conditions for athletes and researchers.
