The Eastern Harbour district, redesigned by the Groep Versluys, transforms the old port of Ostend into a residential and business quarter. With its buildings, it reflects the shapes and dynamics of the beach and sea environment. The building ensemble "One Baelskaai" is part of the new quarter.
In this building, the architects have used the exclusive peripheral location to offer fascinating panoramic views of the beach and the North Sea to almost each of the 59 apartments in "One Baelskaai".
Parapets made of curved VSG
The eleven floors of the building are slightly shifted one above the other. The balconies project at different distances from the building towards the harbour and with their curved lines surround the entire structure, thus picking up the dynamics of the interaction of waves, beach and dunes with their asymmetrical arrangement.
The dynamics of the balconies are ensured by balustrades made of curved laminated glass, which were manufactured by Finiglas Glasveredelung GmbH from Dülmen, the glass bender of the Semco Group. Since the floors have very individual contours when viewed from above, slightly different bending geometries and radii were always the result.

Thermal comfort begins with the window
On the south side of "One Baelskaai", the apartments also have curved insulating glazing, which ensures a panoramic view of the North Sea from the historic harbour. The project presented an unusual challenge and, with the multitude of its curved glass elements and the dynamism of its iconic facade, stands for the hope of a promising future, according to the participating planners from Finiglas.
