Bird-friendly facades

Seen AG: Bird protection glass for the Futurium in Berlin

Seen Elements were used in the glass facade of the Futurium. This bird protection glass is fitted with special markings consisting of 9 mm dots applied at 90 mm intervals.

The effect of this pattern was tested by the Hohenau-Ringelsdorf Biological Station and categorised in the highest effectiveness category A. This means that over 90% of birds perceive the glass as an obstacle, according to the manufacturer.

The marking covers less than 1% of the glass surface and does not impair either the light transmission or the visual appearance of the facade. The three-dimensional structure of the dots creates a reflection of the sunlight.

Realisation at the Futurium

The bird protection glass is suitable both for new buildings and for retrofitting existing facades. The installation on the Futurium was carried out by the company Unikat Berlin. This measure demonstrates a way of making glass facades safer for birds without significantly changing the architectural design.
