The modernisation project in the municipality of Uccle in the south of Brussels has large sash bar windows that define the character of the villa. On the ground floor, double-leaf arched windows with octagonal mullions, horizontal transom divisions and arched louvres enliven the rather plain facade, while on the first floor, the rectangular mullioned windows are adorned with sculpturally moulded, decorative stucco surrounds.

As the existing wooden frames were in excellent condition, the owner family was looking for a solution to replace the single glazing with energy-efficient glass that would preserve the historical character of the windows while meeting the latest insulation standards.
Due to the narrow frames, double glazing was out of the question, so the choice fell on vacuum insulating glass from Fineo.

‘Fineo offers exceptional potential,’ explains Roland Skomda, DACH Sales Manager for Fineo by AGC. ‘The glasses in the vacuum unit are separated by a vacuum of just 0.1 millimetres. This minimal cavity acts as highly efficient thermal insulation by almost completely preventing heat transfer through conduction and convection.’
Thanks to this technology, Fineo achieves the thermal insulation values of triple glazing with a thickness of just 6.7 - 11.7 mm. In the villa in Uccle, the Ug value was reduced from 5.8 to 0.7 W/(square metre K).
As each Fineo glass pane is made to measure, a wide variety of shapes can be realised, such as arched shapes or circular glass for ox-eye round windows.’
Vacuum insulating glass can be fully recycled
Fineo vacuum glass consists exclusively of organic material. It can therefore be completely recycled as a whole at the end of its service life without the vacuum glass having to be laboriously dismantled.
‘And the service life is impressive. According to independent laboratory tests, Fineo maintains its high insulation values for energy and sound insulation for at least 60 years. That's why we can give a product guarantee of 20 years without any problems,’ says Roland Skonda.
Fineo vacuum glass by AGC not only has a CE marking, the manufacturer also offers the only vacuum insulating glass to date with the German general type approval (aBG) for installation as linear vertical glazing.
