In San Diego, California, IQHQ, a real estate developer specialising in life sciences buildings, is currently building one of the largest smart glass facades in the world. The Research and Development District (RaDD), a 17-hectare life sciences project right on the harbour, will feature 14,000 square metres of SageGlass Harmony electrochromic glass and an intelligent control system.
"The team at IQHQ has an incredible vision for the research and development district," said Ryan Park, SageGlass Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "We are proud to be part of this innovative development. The oceanfront complex is designed to attract the best life sciences talent. SageGlass Harmony smart glass will create comfortable, energy-efficient and appealing buildings."
How does the switchable glass from Sage work?
The dynamic glass is able to automatically adjust its tint throughout the day according to the sun's rays. In this way, the glass provides glare protection and regulates the temperature inside the building. At the same time, natural light can continue to enter the room. Both energy can be saved and a pleasant office atmosphere can be created. In addition, the intelligent glass allows employees in the RaDD to enjoy an unobstructed view of San Diego Bay.
SageGlass Harmony provides a seamless connection to the outside world, while ensuring neutral colour rendition inside the building. The prospect of the sky, in particular, is ingeniously enhanced by the gradient of colour in the glass. The industry-exclusive Bright Silver exterior finish also provides a vibrant and uniform glass surface that perfectly complements the exceptional coastal landscape.

The RaDD was designed by internationally renowned design firm Gensler. The building complex is being realised by Turner, a global construction services provider.
