Sustainability in construction: ‘We need a new spirit of optimism’

One thing is clear: Circular construction is no longer a coming trend, but the key to a climate-neutral construction industry – and to the market of the future. The speakers at the Next Expert Forum also emphasised the urgency of reducing CO₂ emissions over the entire life cycle of buildings.

A particularly striking contribution came from Martin Pauli (Arup), who emphasised that total life cycle emissions will be the decisive currency in the construction industry in the future. Compared to countries like the Netherlands, Sweden or Denmark, Germany still has some catching up to do here – but time is running out.

One of the key questions was: How can we optimise building materials and use resources more efficiently? The EU has set ambitious targets for drastic emissions reductions in all types of buildings by 2050.

Race for recycled materials has begun

This includes not only the more efficient use of materials, but also their reuse and the integration of renewable energies. The aim is to put the construction industry on a sustainable and future-oriented footing.

A particularly impressive presentation was given by Moritz Feid (Saint-Gobain), who pointed out the transformation of the glass industry and the increasing importance of recycling. Companies urgently need to secure the appropriate (recycled) raw materials, because the race for recycled materials has already begun.

His advice: Those who position themselves early on will have enormous advantages in the future.

Concluding thoughts

The facade industry is at a decisive turning point. Circular construction not only means fewer emissions, but also new business models and opportunities.

Companies that are already using sustainable materials and processes have a clear advantage and the potential to be among the drivers of innovation in this rapidly changing industry. So don't delay, get going now.
